'For five generations, 'The Meezen' was the anchor within our family. Three generations lived here together. During WWII, many houses in the neighbourhood were badly hit. Our grandfather even took in about 40 people at that time, even in the cellars, because our villa had also suffered a lot of damage. A grocer fled along, with his horse and cart. He had loaded the cart with all his groceries, and his horse was given a temporary home in the large garden. If this house could talk, it would tell countless wonderful, touching stories ...
In 'De Meezen', it was always a bit of the sweet spot. As director of the Farmers' Union, our grandfather was much loved. People would come and ask him for advice, and then they would bring a chicken or fish they caught themselves or fruit from their garden as a thank you. At Easter, grandfather would hide Easter eggs all over the garden, a great feast for his 11 grandchildren, who enjoyed that annual treasure hunt immensely!
Our mummy also loved to share the garden, which was called 'the little park' in the neighbourhood. In winter, we were allowed to 'adventure' through the many rooms and mysterious places in cellars and attic. In the warm months, we could romp, swim, build tree houses with all the children from the street. Mamie then baked chips for us all, in real cone-shaped bags! Wonderful memories ...
Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren - they all learned to ride bikes, play football, swim, romp around, build camps here, catch frogspawn in the stream, build bridges over the stream and search for 'the treasure' in the garden, because there was supposedly a treasure hidden in the garden during WWI by the first owner ... A story that naturally captured our imagination!
Christmas was also always a festive event. All the doors between the three salons were opened and the big family party could begin! For weeks in advance, Christmas lights were lit on all the windows and in the garden. Those feathery lights, since the death of our parents, are still missed by the neighbours.'
