Description

Top house by architect Paul Smekens in early modernist style. Protected monument. You pay only 1% registration duties and receive subsidies for maintenance works.

Fantastically located a handful of kilometres from the city, close to public transport and the well-known approach roads, with hockey club Olympia and the Antwerp Rugby Club on the doorstep, Den Brandt park and Nachtegalenpark within cycling distance.

Along the outside, the architecture's emphasis is on functionality and material expression, and you can feel influences of the Amsterdam School. No frills or superfluous decoration, but sober design with clear volumes, red brick masonry and expressive entrance door. The contrasting colours on the block windows accentuate the structure: white for the vertical frames, black for the narrow window sashes with horizontal division. The facade is characteristically overgrown with wild vine, a vertical garden avant la lettre. From every room, the house offers a view of the green zone of Wilrijk Square.

Inside, the house was renovated in 1995 and given a contemporary feel with open spaces and a pleasant flow around the stairwell. The atmosphere of the interior leans towards the Memphis style, with inspiration from pop art and art deco. Enter with a view of the Brazilian courtyard garden on the staircase, to the left the dining room, to the right the spacious living room, followed by the kkn with breakfast corner. The glvl also has a handy garage for bicycles or rubbish. You can park your car in the car park in front of the house. The first floor comprises four large bedrooms and a bathroom. An additional living/TV room on the corner and three mansard rooms occupy the roof level.

The property requires a refresh in terms of painting and finishing, but is absolutely catalogued as a TOP piece!

owner speaks out

The neighbourhood is really incredible. You live right next to a metropolis and yet there is a quasi village atmosphere here. Everyone knows everyone. The children run in and out of each other's homes, a lovely ambiance. In summer, we barbecue together with the neighbours under the trees opposite our houses in the street.

Just enjoying the sunshine or a cosy apero we do in the front garden. Separated by the hedges in front and with our beautiful Red Beech tree, it is blissful here.

The house itself is truly unique. We instantly fell in love. We have too much space, but our children loved it. They could always play somewhere, build a camp or isolate themselves. Very cool.
